Abstract

Direct Vocabulary Instruction can create an opportunity to build a student’s background knowledge.  There is a correlation between students with a strong vocabulary and their ability to comprehend the stories they read. This project shows many strategies used to strengthen vocabulary.  There are examples from Kindergarten students at a high poverty, Title I school, spanning four weeks using direct vocabulary instruction.  This type of instruction is vital to the needs of the students within my school due to their background of poverty or being native Spanish speaking students. This project helped me to see if students increased their background knowledge and motivation throughout the process.  The results throughout show, that students were engaged during the process of learning new vocabulary words, how often students used the vocabulary strategies put in place, and that students were using these words in their work on a daily basis.  I found many strategies that were used to implement direct vocabulary instruction within the classroom. The goal throughout the process was to determine whether or not students motivation increased after implementing direct vocabulary instruction. Results showed an increase in students comprehension of vocabulary words within their reading, writing and conversations.
